Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Pharoah was one of the last icons of his generation when he passed away on Sept 24, 2022. He was handpicked by John Coltrane, and thereafter released a string of expansive recordings for Impulse. In 2016, he was awarded the NEA's Jazz Master title.
His last album Promises, a collaboration with Floating Points, was heralded as “a late-career masterpiece."
